One Prototype, Infinite Questions
History : The Last Wild Concept Before the Audi Era
Unveiled at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, the Lamborghini Pregunta (Spanish for “Question”) was a radical one-off prototype that dared to push the boundaries ofdesign and engineering. Built on a Diablo chassis by Carrosserie Heuliez-Torino, it emerged just before Audi’s takeover of Lamborghini in 1998, embodying the
free-spirited experimentation of the brand’s final pre-Audi years.
The Pregunta posed a bold question about the future of Lamborghini: what could a supercar become when imagination meets V12 power?
Later shown at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, it remains an enigmatic symbol of Lamborghini’s fearless creativity.
Design : Aerospace Inspiration on Wheels
The Pregunta’s design was heavily inspired by fighter jets, with a matte carbon fiber body finished in grey tones reminiscent of military aircraft. Its canopy-like windshield, scissor doors, and camera-based mirrors gave it a futuristic edge.
Inside, the cockpit featured Azure Blue Alcantara, fiber-optic lighting, and aviation-style instruments including a heads-up display.
Even the name “Pregunta” hinted at the open-ended questions it posed about the direction of Lamborghini design.
Driving Experience : Diablo Power Reimagined
Beneath its radical bodywork, the Pregunta carried Lamborghini’s 5.7-liter V12 from the Diablo, delivering around 530 hp.Power went to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, enabling the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in under 4 seconds
and reach a claimed top speed of over 330 km/h (205 mph).
Lightweight carbon construction and aerospace engineering cues promised an intense, track-focused driving experience, even though the car was never intended for
mass production.
Fun Facts : A Unique Piece of Lamborghini History
- The Pregunta was the very last concept shown before Audi’s takeover of Lamborghini.
- Its single prototype was built on a Diablo chassis and remains a one-of-one car.
- The car was displayed at both the Paris Motor Show 1998 and the Geneva Motor Show 1999.
- It resurfaced in the 2010s and was offered for sale with a price tag over €1.6 million.
- It is expected to return to the spotlight at auction in October 2025 at the Zoute Grand Prix in Belgium, with estimates between €2.5 and €3.5 million.
Legacy : The Last Question
The Lamborghini Pregunta represents the wild, unfiltered vision of Lamborghini’s late 1990s creativity. While it never reached production, its daring design and Diablo underpinnings make it one of the most fascinating concept cars in the brand’s history.
As the final “question” before the structured Audi era began, it stands as a reminder of Lamborghini’s rebellious DNA and continues to capture the imagination of
enthusiasts worldwide.
