The Forgotten SUV Project
History
The Lamborghini LM003 Borneo, also known as the Galileo, was an ambitious concept developed in the mid-1990s during Lamborghini's ownership by theIndonesian group MegaTech. It was intended to be a successor to the LM002, bringing a new luxury off-road vehicle to the market to compete with
models like the Range Rover. However, the project was ultimately abandoned before reaching the prototype stage.
Design
The LM003 Borneo was initially designed by a UK-based company before the project was handed over to SZ Design, a spin-off of the renowned Italian designstudio Zagato. The project explored three different body configurations:
A standard four-door SUV
A station wagon-style variant
An open-top version reminiscent of later Hummer models
This design approach aimed to broaden Lamborghini's appeal by offering an SUV with more luxury-oriented features than the rugged LM002.
Driving Experience : Possible Specifications (Speculative)
Since the LM003 Borneo never progressed beyond the mock-up phase, official specifications were never released. However, based on Lamborghini’s SUVs from that era,we can make some educated guesses about what the Borneo might have featured:
Engine: Unlike the LM002’s 5.2L V12, the LM003 Borneo might have used a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine. A V8 or even a diesel engine could have been considered
to improve usability and efficiency.
Transmission: Likely a manual or automatic 4WD system, similar to the LM002.
Chassis: Likely based on an evolution of the LM002’s rugged chassis, modified for improved road comfort.
Body Style: Three potential versions were considered: a standard SUV, a station wagon, and an open-top variant.
Performance: Given its more luxury-oriented nature, the Borneo might not have been as performance-focused as the LM002 but could have still been capable off-road.
Market Research and Cancellation
Despite early enthusiasm, market research revealed that Lamborghini’s clientele had little interest in a new SUV at the time. Instead, customers expressed a strongerdesire for successors to classic models like the Espada or Diablo. As a result, Lamborghini decided to terminate the LM003 Borneo project before it could progress
beyond a full-scale mock-up.
LM003 diesel connection
The LM003 name had previously been used for an earlier prototype powered by a turbocharged diesel engine, developed in the 1980s. That version, however, suffered frompoor performance and was never put into production. The LM003 Borneo was an entirely separate project, despite sharing the name.
Legacy
Although the LM003 Borneo never made it to production, it remains an intriguing part of Lamborghini’s history. It showcased the brand’s early attempts to expand intothe luxury SUV market—an ambition that would only be fully realized decades later with the Lamborghini Urus.
LM Series Explained: The Confusing Model Numbers
Lamborghini’s LM series can be confusing, as the numbering doesn’t follow a simple pattern. Here’s a quick breakdown:Cheetah (1977) – The original off-road concept, developed for the U.S. military with a rear-mounted Chrysler V8. It failed, and the prototype was destroyed.
LM001 (1981) – A revised version with a rear-mounted AMC V8, but handling issues led to its cancellation.
LMA002 (1982) – The first LM with a front-mounted engine (a Countach V12), serving as the real foundation for the LM002.
LM003 Diesel (1983, prototype only) – A one-off test vehicle with a VM Motori diesel engine, quickly abandoned due to poor performance.
LM004 (1983, prototype only) – A special version with an even bigger 7.2L V12 from powerboats. Only one was made.
LM002 (1986-1993) – The production model with a Countach V12, becoming the legendary "Rambo Lambo."
LM003 Borneo (1996) - Prototype by MegaTech.
