The Master of the Wedge Era

Marcello Gandini was one of the most influential car designers in automotive history and a true icon of Italian design. Born in Turin, Italy, in 1938, Gandini became
famous for creating some of the most dramatic, futuristic, and instantly recognizable supercars ever built. His work defined the visual identity of Lamborghini during
its golden era and helped shape the entire exotic car industry of the 1970s and 1980s.

Gandini joined the legendary Italian design house Bertone in the mid-1960s, where he succeeded Giorgetto Giugiaro as chief designer. Under Bertone, he developed a revolutionary
design language built around sharp angles, low silhouettes, aggressive proportions, and the famous “wedge shape” that would become synonymous with Lamborghini.

Marcello Gandini and Lamborghini

Marcello Gandini worked closely with Automobili Lamborghini primarily from the mid-1960s through the late 1980s. During this period, he designed many of the brand’s most
legendary and groundbreaking models, helping Lamborghini establish its reputation as the rebellious alternative to Ferrari.

Some of the most important Lamborghini models designed by Gandini include:
  • Lamborghini Miura (final development and refinement)
  • Lamborghini Marzal
  • Lamborghini Espada
  • Lamborghini Countach
  • Lamborghini Bravo
  • Lamborghini Athon
  • Lamborghini Diablo (original Gandini design concept)
Among these, the Countach became his most famous masterpiece. Introduced as a concept in 1971, its extreme wedge profile, scissor doors, and fighter-jet-inspired styling
completely changed supercar design forever. Even today, the Countach remains one of the most iconic cars ever created.

A Revolutionary Design Philosophy

Marcello Gandini believed that cars should evoke emotion and excitement rather than simply follow conventional beauty standards. His designs often looked futuristic, almost
like spacecraft for the road. He experimented with unconventional proportions, dramatic lines, hidden details, and radical aerodynamic ideas long before they became mainstream.

One of his most famous innovations was the introduction of the scissor door design on the Countach, a feature that later became a Lamborghini trademark. His work combined
artistic creativity with engineering practicality, making his cars not only visually stunning but also functional.

Beyond Lamborghini, Gandini also designed famous vehicles for brands such as Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, and Renault.

Legacy and Influence

Marcello Gandini is widely regarded as one of the greatest automotive designers of all time. His influence can still be seen in modern Lamborghini models, where sharp lines,
angular styling, and dramatic proportions continue to echo his original vision.

More than simply designing cars, Gandini created rolling works of art that captured the imagination of enthusiasts around the world. His creations became symbols of speed,
excess, innovation, and Italian passion. Values that remain at the heart of Lamborghini today.

For many enthusiasts, Marcello Gandini was not just a designer; he was the architect of the supercar dream.
